Do Modesto skunks make good pets?
Although most people find California skunks annoying, there are people who keep them as pets. They make lovable companions and are loved by their owners. They are essentially wild animals and should not be taken from the wild and domesticated. Babies that are left without a mother and are unable to fend for themselves can be raised as pets, though.
Are they intelligent?
Skunks are very intelligent creatures. They are able to form a bond with their human companions.
Getting “skunked”
Most people who keep Modesto skunks as pets have their scent glands removed. This means that they are in no danger of being sprayed by their noxious gas. It is possible to have this surgically done at a vet or wildlife expert. Baby skunks are not able to spray yet. They will emit a musk but only develop the ability later.
Diet
Skunks are omnivores, meaning they eat a variety of foods. In nature, they usually survive from scraps of food that they are able to scavenge. In captivity, they eat fruit, vegetables, berries, and mealworms. There are even companies that make pet food, especially for skunks.
Playful
Skunks are mischievous and will dig up your home if it is not “skunk proofed.” It is important to teach them, just as you would a dog or cat. They are very curious and like playing with toys. They might steal some of your things in order to make a nest for themselves. They cannot be kept in a cage and like to roam.
Bathroom
Your pet California skunk can be taught to use a litter box. This means that you are able to keep your home and garden clean of feces. Make sure to clean the litter often to keep bacteria from developing.
Lifespan
Skunks that are kept as pets have been known to live up to ten years. They need to be fed a healthy diet and you can have them neutered at an early age. Pet skunks will have to be vaccinated against common pet diseases. Make sure that you find a vet that is willing to look after your pet.
Law
Make sure that you are allowed to keep a wild animal as a pet before you adopt a Modesto skunk. Some states allow it, as long as you have a permit. In some states, they are considered exotic animals and are not legal to keep.
